About the Town of Saltash, Cornwall

Saltash, Cornwall is the largest town in east Cornwall and one of the largest within Cornwall itself.
In the Cornish language Saltash is known as Essa.
It has a population of just over 17,000.
Saltash is known as the Gateway to Cornwall due to its position within the Cornish territory.
There are two bridges connecting Saltash across the River Tamar, one is the Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Royal Albert Bridge this is a railway bridge opened in 1859 by Price Albert.
The second is for cars and is a toll bridge that became the first suspension bridge to be successfully widened whilst still allowing traffic to flow across it.
The Saltash railway station is not far from the town center, providing amongst other things a high speed train to and from London Paddington.
Some notable tourist attractions within Saltash are; the cottage of Sir Francis Drake's first wife, two castles those being Trematon and Ince and a nature reserve opened at Churchtown Farm.
The town has being rapidly expanding during the 90's and a such a large new housing development was implemented.
In 2009 Saltash was deemed the most sought after place to live in the United Kingdom.
Saltash hosts several festivals annually, the two main festivals being the Saltash mayfair which takes place in early May along the Fore Street whilst the other is the Saltash Town Regatta, this is a music and entertainment event which comprises of several gig races taking place on the water.
In 2008 a new event known as the Five Towns Challenge was started which involved various events taking place pitting Saltash against four of it's neighbours.
Saltash has been twinned with two towns in France, Plougastell-Daoulaz and Buzancais.
Saltash has many sport and leisure facilities, close to the centre of the town a leisure centre provides ammeneties such as a gym and pool.
At the north of the town there is a 18-hole golf course called the China Fleet Country Club.
Saltash has it's own sailing club, the Saltash Sailing Club, who provide training and competitions for sailors of all ages.
Saltash also caters for the more extreme sports housing a larger BMX and skatepark.
The Saltash Tennis Club also provides Tennis courts for leisure but also have competitive teams within the Plymouth and District league
